With the power steering
box finally painted and in place I could turn my attention to connecting
the steeringwheel to the steering box. The other thing worth mentioning
in this picture is the blanking off plate where the brake pushrod comes
out of the firewall. Once the booster is remove one is left with a rather
large hole. The hole in the plate is also much larger than the diameter
of the pushrod to allow the rod some room for movement as the brake pedal
travels through its arc. I am going to make a little sock out of leather
which will seal the hole but allows movement, much like a gaiter around
a gearlever. Also note I have shifted the clutch pushrod and mastercylinder
mounting, more on that in the engine transplant pages.
The input shaft on the Toyota box
(which is connected to the steering wheel ) passes through the firewall
and stops. On the Niva steeringbox you will find quite a long extension
on the input shaft. This as well as the difference in splines requires
a new intermediate shaft to be made. Make sure you get a universal joint
that fits the Toyota box from the donor vehicle. This shaft is a relatively
simple project. Cut off the old shafts from the universals and bore the
remains so you are left with a clean hole. I used a piece of 20mm round
bar to make this shaft. Once the correct length has been determined the
ends need to be turned down to fit the universals. The Niva and Toyota
are different sizes. That just leaves welding the whole assembly back together
strongly. You don't want these welds to break!
