The startermotor heatshield needs
to be modified if it is to fit the Fiat block. I think it is important
to take all necessary steps to protect the startermotor as well as
any other components from excessive heat.
The heatshield will still attach to the engine mount (if you use the Niva engine mounts) but needs new fixings to hold the top in place. I simply and quickly made some straps out of
some 16# panelsteel and pop-riveted these to the heatshield.
To further reduce the under-bonnet temperatures I wrapped the two exhaust downpipes in fibreglass insulation tape especially designed for this purpose. This stuff is amazing. You can put your hands on the pipes with the engine running without the risk of
burning yourself. This tape is not very expensive and should go a long
way towards preventing premature breakdown of wiring insulation on the
alternator and startermotor as well as the expensive high pressure hydraulic
hoses for my power steering which run quite close to the exhaust.
